The Best Wedding Photography Conferences to Attend
June 15, 2020
If you’re anything like me, then you’re constantly striving to hone your craft. As a Dallas wedding photographer, my craft is wedding photography and one of the places where I find the most inspiration is photography conferences. Not only are they a great place to meet fellow photographers, but they are always filled with new ideas and technologies for you to make your photos even better than they already are. Keep reading to discover the best wedding photography conferences to attend.
For five days every single year, I attend the Wedding Photography & Portrait Photography International Expo, otherwise known as WPPI. This conference is specific to wedding, event, and portrait photographers and videographers and takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada. This event features plenty of educational conference talks, as well as an interactive exhibition floor where attendees can network, see how the latest photography gear feels in their hands, and even put their skills to the test at pop-up studios.
The Hybrid Collective is another conference I love. It is a three-day event that specializes in educating and inspiring wedding photographers who shoot both digital and film photography. I always learn a lot from this conference, in part due to the star-studded line up of recognized wedding industry photographers they always seem to have (for example, their 2018 conference had Erich McVey, Greg Finck, and D’Arcy Benincosa in attendance).
Looking to build your photography brand and improve your skills along the way? The Rumbo Workshop is for you. This multi-day wedding photography conference is specifically for wedding photographers and visual creatives. At Rumbo Workshop, you will learn everything from how to execute state of the art photography techniques and find the perfect couples for you, to how to optimize your website for SEO and create partnerships on both the local and international level.
I have to say, Let’s Go Workshop is hands down one of the most fun photography conferences I’ve ever attended. It’s kind of like an interactive summer camp, but for professional photographers. The conference is four days in length, and during this time, all attendees stay in the amazing resort they’ve partnered with for that year. During the course of the conference, photographers get to be a part of three live styled shoots and creative photo challenges. There are also games and prizes, communal dinners each night, live music around a bonfire, and even a karaoke party. Plus, they have a really great gift bag (who doesn’t love swag?)!
Imaging USA is one of the longest standing photography conferences in the United States. The three-day event was founded in 1880 and draws over 10,000 professional photographers each year. This makes it one of the best photography conferences for networking. Beyond the attendees, Imaging USA also has over 80 business and photography classes offered at each event, all of which are run by established photographers, and the exhibition room is over 50,000 square feet and features a photography expo and tons of new gear.
United promises to help you transform your photography business, and that’s exactly what it did for me. This four-day photography conference is great for wedding photographers looking to grow their business and brand awareness. At United, there is a real focus on providing practical tips and information for mastering the art of running a business. There also happens to be some ultra inspiring styled shoot photography sessions and a luxe dinner gala (I’ll take any chance I get to dress up!).
The Click Away Conference is another huge photography conference in the United States. To understand this, all you need to do is look at the sponsors list, which includes the likes of Canon, Fujifilm, and Sony. This photography conference takes place over a weekend, with next year’s event happening in Chicago. This is a great place to test out the latest photography gear, and of course, network! It also has some pretty amazing giveaways. Oh, and whatever you do, don’t miss out on the Canon Opening Night Party.
ClickCon is another photography conference I’ve been attending for years. However, next year I’m not going as a guest but as a speaker, and I couldn’t be more excited! This three-day photography and videography conference is easily one of the best in the country. Through the course of the event, you’ll get to attend talks from some of the best photographers in the world, work with over 150 models to build your portfolio, travel to 50 scenic locations in Chicago, and wander around one of the most impressive trade show floors in the US.
Part photography conference, part family cookout, The Photo Cookout is an event like no other. Hands on instruction from some of the country’s best photographers, photo walk sessions that get you outdoors, and of course, delicious food, is what The Photo Cookout is all about. What I love specifically is the diversity of topics that are covered in the lecture series. They have mental health panelists, 7-minute fuel speakers who discuss things like creating a consultation script, and keynote speakers addressing subjects such as Instagram Marketing for Photographers or Finding Your Light.
Photo Native is a holistic photography experience that covers all styles of photography, from wedding photography to travel editorial photography. The conference consists of a mix of talks by industry leaders and what they refer to as “creative breaks.” These creative breaks include the likes of an Experimenting with Film Photo Lab, Drone 101, and Quick and Easy Lighting Setups for Portraiture. Meanwhile, the classes cover everything from Culture and Diversity in Photography to Creating the Natural Light Look Without Natural Light.
At Evolve Workshops, the focus is on community. The event features three days of educational lectures, keynotes, and breakout sessions, some of which run multiple times so you definitely won’t miss it. All educators teaching these classes promise to leave you inspired, but also with tangible lessons you can take away and apply to your own business and photography. There is also a welcome social event, a themed after party event, daily lunches, a swag bag, and tons of prizes and giveaways!
There you have it – my go-to list for the best photography conferences to attend in the United States. If you’re looking to get inspired and meet like-minded people, any of the above conferences are a great place to start!
